a model in my other life

housing prices are through the roof. it's impossible to get acreage in this city, to find a place, and once you do it's never a place that you can afford. the system works like the political system in this country. people inherit apartments from their parents, big brothers, whoever in the party line is about to move out. if you're not ruthless, you get homeless.

homelessness feels like the bottom line in our society. if you don't keep working you'll go homeless. if i wasn't in school. so on. i just did it. made the leap. i had friends, not friends in the kind of places where you could borrow $5000 or who lived in respectable places, but friends whose showers i could borrow. and i was saving enough money to eat at restaurants. i kept my clothes in a desk drawer at work. we'd just transferred all my files to computers, so there was no want for space.

then i was at the DMV, filling out registrations for my car, and there were separate spaces for home and work addresses. i wrote down the same for both. then i got the idea that i could sleep in my office. it was easy, convenient and metro accessible. And, after a week of park benches and crusty lawns, it was a hell of a comfortability. Offices are made to be modern, posh couches and stocked kitchens, anyway. And my company wasn't paying me enough, as is, so they had a perfect right to pay for my rent.
